Lighting has been an important issue for humanity since the beginning of the history of civilization. Having started with the invention of fire, lighting has developed up to LED lamps today. The first people did not have the opportunities we have today, considering the lighting possibilities. They could only use light from the sun, which is a natural energy source for lighting. As time progressed, people found out that fire could be used for warming, protection, cooking and lighting. When they got the fire under control, they started to use the first artificial lighting in their caves.

After this point, one day they noticed that animal fats could ignite and invented oil lamps in the by adding wicks to these fats. The use of lighting for decorative purposes started after this period. They started to use horns, seashells and clay pots for decorative appearance.

There is evidence that the first candles were used by the Romans. With the advancement of metalworking techniques, candle holders for candles were made and decorated with precious natural stones. Along with this, stained glass candle holders were the most important lighting decoration items of the Middle Ages.

In 1792, the kerosene lamp, discovered by a Scottish engineer and inventor William Murdoch, was used for lighting in houses and shops. During this period, glass workshops produced lamps that could be considered as precious and masterpieces. Most used materials by lamp manufacturers were transparent or colored glass, ceramic, porcelain, opaline, bronze and brass. Lamp manufacturers were also influenced by the fashion styles of the period while producing gas lamps. For example, the Art Nouveau of the 1900s, the Art Deco of the 1925s.

With the presence of an electric bulb, lighting has become much easier and cheaper. In the previous periods, chandeliers produced a lot of soot and odor due to the oils used in oil lamps. Systems for the evacuation of this soot and odor in architecture for ceiling lighting at that time were very expensive. After this period, electric bulbs provided very clean lighting and began to be placed on the ceilings of ordinary buildings. Thanks to this, nowadays we design magnificent hanging lamps and chandeliers for ceiling lighting. These designs add decorative looks to the ceilings of the ordinary people’s houses.

In this project, we designed a great hanging lamp shade for ceiling lighting that you can cut on laser cutters. The project consists of 11 units of 2D parts in total. You can cut these 2D pieces from 4mm wood, plywood and MDF plates. When you combine these 2D pieces that you cut on your laser cutter, you will get a unique 3D hanging lamp shade. You can download files such as cdr and dxf with laser cutting drawings of this template for free.
