File Formats Used in Laser Cutting Machines
Vector, CAD, and some compound files are used to craft laser-cut projects in laser cutting machines.
1. Vector Files
Every lines and dots that make any object in vector files are formulas consisting of mathematical formulas and graphics. These formulas are used by laser cutting machines to create a cutting path. The best vector formats for laser cutting machines are SVG and CDR files. Since they are not made of pixels, they will not be affected when you want to scale them. On the other hand, pixel-based raster image files are used for laser engraving or laser etching.
2. CAD Files
CAD files are also vector files. They are more technical 2D and 3D drawings compared to graphic vector files. They are widely used in architecture, industry, and engineering. The most commonly used CAD file formats in CNC laser cutting machines are DXF and DWG files.
3. Compound Files
Some image file formats are both vector-based and pixel-based files. PDF file format are the two most popular compound file examples. Depending on the used software, you can run and save these files as 2D vectors or pixels.
